India, like many countries, has a complex and diverse population of individuals who identify with genders other than what was assigned to them at birth. Unfortunately, in India, many members of the community face discrimination and harassment, particularly when accessing public facilities, including restrooms. This is particularly true for transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals who may not conform to traditional binary gender norms.

Therefore, it would be prudent for India to move towards having gender-neutral restrooms to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. By providing

restrooms that are accessible to all genders, regardless of how an individual identifies or expresses themselves, we can create a more welcoming and inclusive society.

Traditionally gendered restrooms can be unsafe for transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals, who may face discrimination and violence when using facilities that do not align with their gender identity. Gender-neutral restrooms provide a safer environment for these individuals, reducing the risk of violence and harassment.

The Indian Constitution provides for the protection of gender identity as a fundamental right. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the government and public institutions to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their gender identity, have access to basic facilities, including restrooms.

Gender-neutral restrooms are essential to creating an inclusive and safe environment for all individuals, including those who identify as LGBTQ. India should move towards gender-neutral restrooms to ensure that all individuals have access to basic facilities, regardless of their gender identity, and to uphold their constitutional rights.
